In the Maldives, every resort is its own island — and choosing the right island shapes the entire trip. A guide from our curation, with the best time to go and travel logistics.
There is no single "best resort" in the Maldives. There is the right resort for a honeymoon couple, for a family with young children, for someone who wants to dive every day, or for a short trip where every hour spent in transfers counts. Because each resort occupies its own island, the choice defines everything: arrival time, the type of reef, the dining and the pace of the stay.
All five resorts below work on an all-inclusive basis — which matters a lot in the Maldives: since there is nowhere to "go out for dinner", having meals, drinks and part of the activities included avoids surprises on the final bill.
Reached by a seaplane flight of around 40 minutes from Malé, Heritance Aarah sits in Raa Atoll, an area farther from the busier central atolls and known for its reefs and dive sites. It has around 150 villas, split between beach villas and overwater suites, and a premium all-inclusive plan covering à la carte dining, cocktails, minibar and selected excursions. Among its restaurants, the highlight is Ambula, serving contemporary Sri Lankan cuisine.
Best for: couples and families who want the seaplane flight as part of the experience and value varied dining without thinking about the bill.
About 15 minutes by speedboat from Malé airport, it is one of the quickest resorts to reach in the country. It has more than 260 rooms and villas, from ocean-view rooms to overwater villas, and the all-inclusive Fushi Plan, with meals, drinks, live music and daily water sports.
Best for: first-time visitors, families and short stays — or as an overnight before or after another resort, when the international flight arrives or departs at an awkward hour.
In North Malé Atoll, around 50 minutes by speedboat, OBLU SELECT Sangeli spans two small islands connected by a curve of overwater villas — the spa and two restaurants are on the smaller island, which gives it a more secluded feel. The Serenity Plan includes a daily-refilled minibar, drinks, two fine-dining experiences a week and a spa treatment on longer stays.
Best for: couples who want the classic overwater villa with a very complete plan, at a mid-sized resort (around 137 villas).
Around 40 minutes by speedboat, also in North Malé Atoll, VARU has 108 villas — most of them overwater — and a house reef with healthy coral, great for snorkelling straight from your villa. The VARU Plan includes dining, drinks and experiences such as guided snorkelling and sunset cruises. There is a kids' club and several pools.
Best for: travellers who want to spend much of the day in the water, and families looking for children's facilities without giving up overwater villas.
In South Malé Atoll, about 45 minutes by speedboat, OZEN LIFE MAADHOO has 94 beach and overwater villas, with sunrise- or sunset-facing options. Its signature is M6m, a seafood restaurant six metres below the surface with a panoramic view of the reef. The Indulgence Plan includes fine dining, premium drinks, non-motorised water sports and a spa experience.
Best for: honeymooners or special occasions, for a truly unforgettable dinner as part of the stay.
The dry season runs from December to April, with calm seas, clear skies and little rain — it is high season, with higher rates and the need to book well in advance, especially around New Year. From May to November is the monsoon season, with more frequent showers, but also better rates and sunny days between the rains. Temperatures stay above 25 °C all year round.
There are no direct flights from Brazil to the Maldives. The most common route connects through Dubai or Doha, arriving at Malé's Velana International Airport. That opens an opportunity: turning the connection into a few days' stopover in the Middle East before heading to the islands.
From the airport, the transfer to the resort is by speedboat (for atolls near Malé) or seaplane (for the more distant ones, such as Raa Atoll). One important detail: seaplanes only operate during daylight. If your international flight lands at night, you will need to stay overnight near Malé — which is why the flight time should be chosen together with the resort, not separately.
Matching flight, arrival time, transfer type, villa category and meal plan is what separates a smooth trip from one that starts with a lost night in Malé. That is the fit ATF Travel builds into every Maldives itinerary, as part of our luxury travel curation.
